Churches and in particular Cathedrals are such amazing buildings.
The craftsmanship and detailing that went into their original construction are quite superb, from the stonemasons, to hand crafted joinery, and amazing stain glass windows, all combine to create calm, reverential, and awe inspiring spaces, just as they were supposed to do.
My home city of Sheffield has I imagine quite a small cathedral compared to many across Britain and Europe, indeed unit 1914 it was only a Parish church, but is none the less an interesting building. Altered and extended many times during it's history, the interior seems to me to be almost intimate, yet somehow complex. The modern entrance was added in 1966, and further alterations were carried carried out more recently, to make the building more attractive to visitors, this I feel gives the Cathedral a distinctive look, and I personally like the juxtaposition of contemporary and traditional.
